Polyphonic Choir San Giorgio - Saint George Gospel Group: who we are

The Polyphonic Choir "S. Giorgio" of Pizzo, Association legally acknowledged, was born in April of 1996. In these years of activity it has exhibited in Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Liguria, Abruzzo and Sicily for cultural and musical associations like Red Cross, ADMO, Forest Corp of the State, Rotaract, Leo Club, C.A.M.S. of the University of the Studies of Calabria, etc...

Of great relief was the presence in the eighth edition of the " T.I.M." - International Tournament of Music - in which has brightly passed the first two entrance examination, elaborated at the conservatory "M. Ravel" of Paris, deserving the admission to the semifinal among the first six choirs, on around sixty participants in Europe. In the final phase, at the Arts Academy in Rome, it has brightly classified to the fourth place.

May 18 th 2000, on invitation of the Office of the liturgical celebrations of the pontiff, it has sung, together to other Calabrian choirs and in alternation with the very famous choir of the Chapel Sistina, in S. Pietro square in Vatican, animating the liturgy of the jubilee of the presbyteries, transmitted in all the world by TV, and presided by the Father Saint Giovanni Paolo II in the day of his eightieth birthday.

Some exhibitions have been transmitted by local television nets and by RaiTre, and have been reviewed by national and local newspapers. It has intense relationships of collaboration with affirmed regional musical formations of the region, among which the "Gruppo Filarmonico Calabrese", chamber music's orchestra directed by Paolo Sergio Marra, and with famous national and international musicians, like the famous organist Mexican Victor Urban.

Since 2002 the Choir has known how to give himself a new face as Gospel Group. Introducing a new repertoire entirely formed by contemporary gospels accompanied by musical bases on rhythms jazz, blues and reggae, it has gotten unanimous consents for the originality and for the feelings produced during the various concerts, characterized by games of lights and involving rhythms.

The association is present also in the city cultural circle,organizing and patronizing concerts and cultural demonstrations; it has taken care of, in May of 2000, the inauguration of the monumental sculptural work "Biancosavelli" erected in one of the town gardens, in honor of the illustrious artist fellow-citizen Angelo Savelli and realized by the sculptor Ilario Principe. The repertoire of the choir spaces from the sacred music to that popular, from the spirituals to the folklorist songs. Founder and actual manager of the Polyphonic Choir "S. Giorgio" is Sergio Coniglio.

The Director

Sergio Coniglio has completed his musical studies at the Conservatory "F. Torrefranca" of Vibo Valentia graduating himself in piano with the maximum of the votes and the praise. He perfects himself later on studying with M.Bertucci, H.Moreno, A.Delle Vigne, and following Masterclasses with G.Lanni, P.Camicia, S.Cafaro, F.Medori for the piano, A.Bonucci for the chamber music, S.Korn and W.Marzilli for the chorus direction.

It gains numerous piano and Chamber music competitions and it has exhibited in Italy and abroad (Albania, Canada, France, Belgium, Holland, Syria) for important agencies and concertistics associations (Italian Institute of Culture of Tirana - Albania, Italian Embassy in Damascus - Syria, VolkUniversiteit of Leiden - Holland, Circle of the Ministry of the Foreign countries of Rome, hall of the Papal Institute of Sacred Music of Rome, Ducale Academy of Genoa, Theatre “Rendano” of Cosenza, “Masciari” of Catanzaro, “Cilea” of Reggio Calabria, Conservatory “M.Ravel” of Paris, Arts Academy of Rome).

He collaborates, as organist, with calabrian poliphonic choruses, assuming their direction in various occasions. In 18 May of 2000, as organist, accompanies the songs of income and the exit procession of the Saint Father John Paul II, in occasion of the jubilee of the presbyteries, in S.Peter's square in Vatican, transmitted in world vision on RAI UNO.
He found and directs in 1994 and 1995 the Poliphonic Chorus of the Hipponiana Academy of Vibo Valentia; from 1996 is director of the “Poliphonic Chorus S.Giorgio” and of the “Saint George Gospel Group” of Pizzo, with which he has held concerts in Calabria, Lazio, Campania, Liguria, Abruzzi, Sicily.

Sergio Coniglio places side by side to the concertistics activity also the Didactics: it has taught at the Conservatories of Rome, Reggio Calabria, Avellino, Campobasso, Messina and his students have been reward in festivals and national music competitions. Since December 2006 he is titular of the teaching post of Complementary Pianoforte at the Conservatory of Music “F.Torrefranca” of Vibo Valentia.
